Hilary Soper, painter and printmaker based in Slapton, has been a member of the group since it was established at Salcombe Art Club more than 20 years ago by Mike Glanville.
Most techniques are explored, but Monotype, the most painterly form of printmaking, is regular practice, usually involving a number of passes through the press to achieve vibrant, transparent colours. Etching presents many opportunities to experiment, often combined with chine colle for splashes of colour. Woodblock is a new addiction.
Home and garden, ships and sea are dominant themes also shared by fellow member Ysabel Winzar. Collaborative printmaking with Ysabel began in 2015 with their successful show “Whatever the Weather”, and they continue to make work together under their joint name Compass Rose.
